A BIT ABOUT MY JOURNEY
Devotion was an early gift in my life. My young years of Catholicism struck a deep chord in my heart. The celebrations of saints and angels, the rituals of Latin hymns, the familiar fragrance of incense, all moved me.
My mind and consciousness turned as my seventeen-year-old eyes caught glimpses of the first yogi~guru’s arriving in America. Paramahansa Yogananda’s words bridged my thinking to a more universal, non-dual experience.
Swami Satchidananda’s first western book inspired my yogic calling. Being drawn into a refreshed spiritual life, I rose, deepened and grew. These spiritual traditions beckoned, my mind expanded, my heart opened. Love was a constant theme of my experience.
I had a developing interest in the body’s health and healing ways.
A rare Swedish Health Center opened outside my hometown, introducing me to the power of hands-on healing.
Being drawn into Naturopathic Medicine during its pioneering years, I was immersed in a community of doctors, practitioners, and families for over five years. These times encouraged an attunement to nature, grounding my life in many fundamental ways.
A clear vision brought me to Maui in the seventies.
Profound teachers streamed through our island enriching my path, as beads on my growing mala of life.
Swami Satchidananda blessed us with his presence.
The Revered Situ Rinpoche offered the Kalachakra Empowerment, as an opening to our island to this Tibetan Tradition.
Pir Vilayat Khan, son of Mirshid Inayat Khan, graced our home, to share sacred Sufi mystical practices with our community.
Mirshid Moineddin Jablanski continued the teachings and practices of this lineage.
Patabi Jois, an Indian Yogi Guru, visited numerous times to share retreat and practice with the Ashtanga family. I was fortunate to have had many hours studying and practicing with him, as well as, with his and other Master Teachers of various yogic traditions.
I feel so blessed, living on this little island in the middle of the blue Pacific, to have studied with such a rare quality of beings.
Traveling to China in 1986, gave me a rare experience to train in Chinese hospitals. Here, esteemed Chinese-Taoist Master teachers led me to a deeper connection to healing energy.
I studied Qi (energy) Gong (cultivation), which enriched my exploration of the Taoist healing arts, Qigong healing and Tuina massage.
Returning from our China travels, Venerable Lama Tenzin’sblessed our Grace Clinic and Rejuvenation Center, and the opening of the Dragon’s Den Herb Shoppe, in Makawao, MAUI.
This was one of the first healing centers on Maui, where we focused Chinese & Naturopathic Medicine, Chinese-Taoist practices, as well as my developing bodywork modalities of cranial sacral, myofascial work, woven with energy work. All to offer into my service of healing, body, mind and spirit.
For more than 25 years, we hosted extraordinary healers and practitioners, offering classes, workshops, lectures, demonstrations, treatments, and health fairs. We even began the Chinese New Year Dragon Dances and Martial Arts Parade in Makawao. It was an inspired and guided healing movement.
A bright horizon of change came when Ram Dass arrived at our clinic door. Our growing relationship touched me deeply and reached into a new vastness of my inner Universe. From sharing personal healing sessions for Baba Ram Dass and the House family, to the invitation to guide a Qigong experience at his bi-annual Open Your Heart in Paradise retreats. I stepped up into a new level of teaching Qigong and Yoga, expanding into circles that reached around the world.
The director of the Garchen Buddhist Institute, a Tibetan Buddhist retreat and teaching center, discovered my work and invited me to join Garchen Rinpoche, with his devoted Lama’s, for their retreats and empowerments to open the day with my unique blend of Qigong~Yoga.
So there, in the Chino Valley, Arizona, is the most precious holy land, with a reflected beauty and power from their homeland, Tibet. I circumambulated the most beautiful stupa, in gratitude, for the remembrance of a grand life journey.
Om Mani Padme Hum I feel honored and excited to be invited into the Garchen Institutes virtual retreats. We will continue to share a collaboration of teachings from our Venerable Garchen Rinpoche and his community of Lamas. I will be offering the morning sunrise wake up into our precious body/temples. These teachings are all free on live stream from Garchen.net.
Now, after 7 months of the Covid-19, living a very different lifestyle, a group class of who’s been practicing together in the qigong~yoga classes I have been teaching for 30+ years, now gather in a majestic meadow in PoliPoli, on our Haleakala Crater/Mountain. We join outdoors, as a circle, in the sweet beauty and power of nature, cultivating our practices: breath, meditation, movement, and energy flow.
May these offerings be of benefit for all beings.
May these gifts and skills find their best way to serve.
Deep bows and gratitude to all my teachers!
Aloha & Namaste’,
Joyanna Maria Ananda
